The Fascinating History of Pizza

Pizza, a popular food enjoyed worldwide, has an interesting history. Its origins can be traced back to Naples, Italy in the late 1800s, where baker Raffaele Esposito is credited with making the first pizza with tomato sauce, cheese, and toppings. Legend has it that he made three different pizzas for King Umberto I and Queen Margherita, with the Queen's favorite being one that had basil, mozzarella cheese, and tomato sauce, designed to represent the colors of the Italian flag. Esposito named it Pizza Margherita in her honor.

Although pizza did not immediately catch on in Italy, it was brought to the United States by Italian immigrants, and in 1905, the first American pizzeria, Lombardi's, was established in New York City. Pizza's popularity grew rapidly, and by World War II, it had become one of America's favorite foods. The Totino family is credited with producing the first frozen pizza in the 1950s.

In 1958, two brothers, Frank and Dan Carney, opened a pizzeria in Wichita, Kansas, called Pizza Hut, which became very popular. They soon opened new restaurants, and the first pizza franchise was born. Today, there are over 10,000 Pizza Hut restaurants worldwide. Similarly, Domino's was established by two brothers who purchased a pizzeria called Dominick's in Ypsilanti, Michigan with a $900 loan. In 1984, John Schnatter founded Papa John's in Indiana.

Today, Americans spend over 33 billion dollars each year on pizza, and there are over 77,000 restaurants in America that serve pizza. Pizza has come a long way from its humble origins in Naples, and continues to be a favorite food around the world.
